When the Sun Roars: A Reflection on the November 11 Solar Flare
Finding Hope in the Wake of Celestial Fire
On November 11, 2025, the Sun unleashed its strongest solar flare of the year, an X5.1-class eruption that disrupted radio signals across continents and lit up the sky with auroras.
Early on the morning of November 11, 2025, the Sun erupted with a force that rippled across our planet. From sunspot AR4274, a powerful X5.1-class solar flare burst forth, the most intense of the year, triggering radio blackouts across Africa and Europe and sending a coronal mass ejection (CME) racing toward Earth at over 4.4 million mph. For many, this was a moment of scientific fascination. For me, it was also a moment of spiritual reflection, which I try to do now with all these amazing events we have been having on the astronomy scene.
I actually saw this eruption happen in real time. As you know, I have been working on a project to discover a comet using NASA’s real-time data that is uploaded every 12 minutes. I captured the video above from their timelapse feed, and you can see how intense this eruption was!
Solar flares are born from magnetic tension, fields twisted and strained until they snap, releasing energy that can disrupt satellites, GPS, and even power grids. They are reminders that creation itself groans (Romans 8:22), that even the heavens are not immune to turmoil. And yet, in their wake, they often bring beauty: shimmering auroras dancing across the night sky, visible as far south as Florida & Mexico!
This paradox, destruction followed by wonder, echoes deeply in our faith journey. I know what it is to feel the rupture of plans, the blackout of clarity. I know what it is to stand in the aftermath of brokenness, unsure if light will return. But just as the Sun’s fury gave way to celestial splendor, so too does God’s redemptive power transform chaos into glory.
The prophet Isaiah wrote, “I will give you treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places” (Isaiah 45:3). What a fitting promise for nights like these. The auroras that followed this flare were not just scientific phenomena; they were whispers of grace, radiant reminders that even in the shadow of disruption, beauty is not lost. It is reborn.
In my own life, I may feel the flare; it can be sudden, searing, disruptive. But I am not abandoned. The same God who set the stars in motion also sets hope in my heart. The same power that shakes the heavens also steadies my soul.
So tonight, as I gaze upward, hoping again to see the brilliant lights of the auroa borialis, I will remember: the Sun may roar, but the sky still sings. And in that song, I will find the rhythm of restoration.
Until next time, keep looking up!
