Special Edition - Jesus & The Night Sky Before Good Friday
Did Jesus find comfort under a sky full of stars?
The Night Before Good Friday
This week has brought me a lot of pause as we walk through the week leading up to Holy Week. I often wonder and try to imagine the atmosphere surrounding Jesus as we withdrew to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. It was a moment of deep anguish, as He knew the weight of the cross that awaited Him. His closest disciples—those He had trusted and nurtured—were asked to watch and pray, but fatigue overcame them, and they fell asleep. Jesus was left alone under the vast expanse of the night sky, surrounded only by the quiet darkness and the soft rustle of leaves. In His solitude, He poured out His heart to the Father, seeking strength for the incomprehensible sacrifice ahead.
Yet even in His loneliness, my hope is that Jesus found comfort and connection with the Creator as He looked up to His Father. It is the very same sky that stretches over us and was painted by the hand of the Father—the One who set each star in place and called them by name. The night sky became a silent witness to His prayers, a canvas displaying the infinite power and care of the Father. I believe that in that vulnerable moment, Jesus was not truly alone; He was enveloped by the presence of the One who hears every cry and sees every heartache.
I have often found myself under that very same sky Jesus called out to and have cried out in my own moments of darkness, praying for relief. I have many images of star filled skies from deep, dark locations away from city lights, but still, even now, the sky Jesus got to witness had to be so much more full, and just an incredible sight.
As I reflect on this sacred moment, and I encourage you to do the same, we too can find solace under the night sky. When life feels heavy and lonely—when friends falter and burdens grow—we can look to the heavens and remember the One who crafted them. The stars above are not just distant lights; they are reminders of God's unchanging love, His eternal sovereignty, and His intimate care for His children.
Take a moment tonight to step outside. Look up. Breathe in the stillness. Let the beauty of the night sky speak to your heart, just as it comforted Jesus in His moment of need. Pray and know that your Father listens. The same God who heard His Son in Gethsemane hears you now. He is near, and His love spans farther than the stars.
Scripture for Reflection:
"He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name." – Psalm 147:4
Prayer:
Lord, in the quiet of the night, let us feel Your presence as Jesus did. When we face moments of loneliness and fear, remind us that we are never alone. Let the sky above be a testament to Your greatness and a refuge for our weary hearts. Thank You for hearing us and comforting us in every circumstance. Amen.
Let this night be a time to connect with the Father, who is constant, loving, and closer than we can imagine.
